I thought it was time to update my First Aid skills. A few things have changed since I got my certificate in 1956! They hadn’t invented CPR back then, and as a St John’s Ambulance Cadet I had to carry in my first aid kit, believe it or not – smelling salts.
It was very useful for all those fainting ladies we used to encounter! That sounds like something out of a Jane Austen novel now doesn’t it? So when I was given the chance to attend a course in the village, I didn’t hesitate.
I thought I had planned my attendance at this new course properly. I turned up early, and spoke to the presenter. I explained my difficulties and how he could best help me.
I asked him to tell me where he would be standing, and what form the presentation would take. I chose my seat with care, and had Jan along with me to bring me up to speed if I lost it.
When the presentation started I was disappointed to note that in spite of all our planning I was not able to follow anything the presenter was saying.
However, all was not lost. I had one more trick up my sleeve. Around my neck I was wearing my new Comfort Audio FM transmitter. So I stopped the presenter, explained that I couldn’t follow and asked him if he minded wearing the transmitter.
He was very happy to do so, and clipped it on to his shirt pocket. The receiver is permanently plugged in to my BAHA. From then on the only bits I couldn’t follow were the questions and comments from other participants, but Jan was able to keep me updated with any important comments.
Job done.
